All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren was first published in 1946. The title is drawn from the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. In 1947 Warren won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel. All the King's Men portrays the dramatic and theatrical political rise and governorship of Willie Stark, a cynical liberal socialist in the America South during the 1930's. The novel is narrated by Jack Burden, a political reporter who comes to work as Gov. Stark's right hand man. The trajectory of Stark's career is interwoven with Burden's life story and philosophically, the story of Wille Stark and the Story of Jack Burden is one story.
