During the Civil War a number of European officers volunteered as aides to Union and Confederate field commanders. Only a few though published memoirs of their wartime experiences. One who did was William Watson who enlisted to fight for the South and wrote this book. His unit was the 3rd Regiment of Louisiana Volunteers who the author described as "some of the choicest spirits from the Louisiana parishes which they represented" "with the fire of patriotic devotion sparkling in their clear eyes". Watson had no vested interest in slavery; nor did he approve of the political maneuvering that led to secession. Yet prompted by a love of adventure and sympathy for the people of the South, he joined in the war's first days.
