Black leather bound hardcover with gold lettering and embossed frontispiece. Gold tip page edges with red ribbon attached bookmark. Marbled endpapers front and back. Binding tight and straight as new. The pages inside are still crisp and clean with no markings seen. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 315 pages.

The author was born in Virginia and fit the idealistic image of Johnny Reb, clean cut and eager, leaving his surroundings to join a unit that became famous for its membership and heroics. He was 18 and a jr in college when he left for Richmond. When the cadets marched off, they were led by one of their professors and the authors former Sunday school teacher, Major Thomas E. Jackson, who would earn his nickname, Stonewall, at Bull Run. Initially Moore, the author, was forbid by his father to enlist because he had 3 brothers already serving. When he finally got permission he joined the Rockbridge Artillery Co. attached to the Stonewall Brigade. Less than 6 months after leaving home, he had fought in 9 battles, the same or more skirmishes, marched more than 1,000 miles, and had an iron ball tear into his hip, making him lame for life. He saw service at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. He was wounded again, and then returned to duty and was one of the 93 members of his battery to surrender at Appomattox. His memoirs, completely 30 yrs later, carried an intro by Robert E. Lee who was a close friend. His observations and eye for detail make the book a valuable record of army life.
