The author spent much of his life striving for literary fame and gained it only after his death. He published western fiction as his own expense in 1841 but sold few copies. He was editor for several newspapers, then headed to Richmond only days before the firing upon of Fort Sumter, to volunteer to the Confederacy. He started to write his journals on the day of his departure. His daily entries mirrored the hopes, reactions and feelings of the Southern capital and its government. Following the collapse of the South, he lived in Virginia and reworked his diary. He added assertions based on hindsight (the diaries weakness) and rewrote passages without proper regard for chronology. ( He dated the Battle of Shiloh as April 1 1862, though the engagement did not begin until 5 days later) Regardless, the mistakes are minor compared with the overall value of the diary which has become diary of record for the Confederate life of a volunteer. Unfortunately, Jones died 2 months before publication.
