This is a collectible hardcover from International Collectors Library. Blue hardcover boards re-create a fine old binding with design stamped in gold. The binding represents the work of the well known artist, Rafael Palacious who was commissioned to re-create the blue morocco leather and embossed in 24k gold with an attached ribbon bookmark. This copy is very good, very clean inside, pages clean and unmarked. Binding is tight and straight. There is a "bump" to back cover as shown in one picture. Rest of book only shows light shelf wear.
The woman who distinguished herself under the pen name George Eliot was one of the world's 3 great woman novelists - the others being Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë. Born Mary Anne Evans, this book, Adam Bede, is considered one, if not her best, masterpieces. The novel published in 1859, has remained in print ever since. The plot follows 4 characters in a rural community in 1799. It is a romance and a tragedy with the main character being involved in a love triangle (or rectangle by adding a cousin), being seduced by one, being admired by another, and ultimately being charged with child murder.
