This is a non-fiction best selling work that is based on real life events that occurred in the 1980's. Because it reads like a novel, it is sometimes classified as a Non-fiction novel. The central narrative concerns the killing of Danny Hansford, a local male prostitute, by respected antique dealer Jim Williams. This results in 4 murder trials. The book describes Williams' version of the killing, which is that it was self defense not murder.
The book highlights many other notable Savannah residents including the Lady Chablis, a local drag queen, who adds a light-hearted contrast to the more serious tones of the book.
The famous statue on the cover, "The Bird Girl" was designed both as art and a birdseed holder. A Savannah photographer was commissioned to take the photo for the book cover and it immediately became one of the most iconic covers ever. Soon, the statue was a tourist attraction and, owing to concerns of integrity, was later moved for display in Talfair Museums, only to be moved again to a dedicated space in the Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah. Everything about this book is iconic, moving and haunting, making it a try collectible for any library.
