This book is the first of the posthumously published works of Hemingway. It was found among 332 other works by his wife after his death. Hemingway began writing it in 1950 and intended to encompass 3 stories to illustrate different stages in the life of its main character, Thomas Hudson. It was known as the "sea trilogy". Hemingway wife and editor combined the 3 stories about the islands and named them as Islands in the Stream.
The story starts prior to World War Two with Thomas Hudson finding tranquility in the Bahamas until his 3 sons arrive for the summer. The second "story" occurs during World War Two and progresses into the war and the final act ends on the archipelago of northern Cuba when the character Thomas Hudson pursues fleeing Germans upon learning they massacred an entire village to cover their retreat. Among the three stories occurs the deaths of his children and the change in Hudson from tranquility to cynicism. Hemingway uses many of his real life experiences to form this story and its characters.
