This novel, first published in 1936, tells the story of Thomas Sutpen, an enigmatic stranger born into poverty in West Va. and who came to Mississippi in the early 1830s with an architect and a band of Haitian slaves to wrest his fabulous mansion in the muddy bottoms of the Mississippi wilderness. Once complete, all Sutpen needs is a wife to bear him a son. What follows is an allegory of southern history, the rise and fall of southern plantation culture and overall tragedy. Often considers Falkner's finest work, this wonderful collectible is a must for any literary library.
